2026 marks 100 years for the All India Institute of Local Self-Government.
Our story begins in the 1920s, during the turbulent period of India’s freedom movement. The first call for such an institute was made in 1917 at a Conference of Municipalities and Local Boards in Poona (now Pune). However, it wasn’t until July 1926 that the idea was finally materialized and the Local Self-Government Institute came into being in Bombay (now Mumbai).
From training elected representatives at the local level to empowering local institutions, the Institute has been a constant companion in India’s democratic journey. After India’s independence, the institute expanded its operations all over the country. That’s how the All India Institute of Local Self-Government came into being.
As we mark a century of service, we celebrate not just our history, but our enduring commitment to grassroots democracy and stronger cities for the future. Join us to celebrate AIILSG’s centenary in Mumbai.
